Case Study: Refugee Council

For its 2007 Christmas Appeal, the British Refugee Council wanted to catch the attention of its regular donors and also reach out to new donor audiences.

They decided to use audio to achieve both goals, commissioning a half-hour BBC-style documentary programme on vulnerable women for release on CD, which was then reworked into four separate podcasts and released on the Internet.

We worked with the charity's fundraising and web team to develop the content ideas. We then interviewed the charity's experts and several female refugees, weaving their stories into a compelling programme with a sensitively written and presented script.

The series was named Podcast of the Week by Time Out magazine, which wrote:

“It’s a sign of the maturity of the form that the giggly, low-fi amateur offerings that used to characterise podcasting have yielded to increasingly slick and serious programming like this. The Refugee Council has cottoned on to the potential of campaigning online, and these podcasts use heart-rendering personal testimony to highlight its work and raise funds. It’s a worthwhile campaign that deserves greater recognition.”
